Barrelhouse Online Poetry Workshop with Jill Alexander Essbaum

Jill Alexander EssbaumJoin poet and teacher Jill Alexander Essbaum for an 8 week online poetry workshop sponsored by Barrelhouse magazine.

WHAT IS IT?

An 8 week online workshop that will focus on polishing up your poems for publication, along with some of the specific elements of successful poetry.

DETAILS?

Each week, we'll workshop poems. Each participant will have the opportunity to workshop a poem a week, for a total of 8 poems over the course of the 8 week period.  You’ll get detailed feedback from both the workshop instructor and your classmates.

Every other week we'll take a look at specific elements of poetry—form, meter, sound, sense, and so on — providing a brief lecture, as well as online resources, readings, and a writing prompt/exercise. All the readings will be from literary magazines or poetry collections, and they'll all be free — participants won't have to buy any books or other materials.

The workshop uses the Moodle learning management system. Participants do not have to be in a certain place at a certain time, but will log into the workshop space throughout the week, whenever it is convenient for them.

WHEN?

The workshop starts on October 2 and runs for 8 weeks.

HOW MUCH?

The workshop is $150 (plus a small transaction processing fee from EventBrite, which is hosting this page). All proceeds will go to support Barrelhouse, which is a nonprofit literary magazine that seeks to bridge the gap between serious art and pop culture.

JUST HOW AWESOME IS JILL ALEXANDER ESSBAUM?

Jill Alexander Essbaum is the author of three full-length collections of poetry: Heaven, the 1999 winner of the Bakeless Prize, Necropolis, and Harlot. A former NEA literature fellow, she's published in many journals both secular and religious, print and online, well-known and ridiculously obscure including Poetry, The Christian Century, Image, No Tell Motel, Gulf Coast, Christianity and Literature, and others. Her poem "On Reading Poorly Transcribed Erotica" is included in the anthology The Best American Erotic Poems: 1800-Present, and her poem "Apologia" was reprinted in The Best American Poetry 2010. Her poem "Stays" will appear in Best American Poetry 2011.

She is an instructor in the UCR-Palm Desert Low Residency MFA program. She is an associate editor for the online journal ANTI- as well as the print magazine The National Poetry Review. She blogs occasionally at The Best American Poetry Blog where you will find her rolling collection of puns and Tom Swifties. In addition to poetry and puns, her interests extend to Old Time Radio, 1970's African-American television, and musician and songwriter Nick Cave. She lives in Austin, Texas.
